Upcoming Creative Writing MOOCs – massive & free for 2014

The UK’s MOOC platform FutureLearn has got two creative writing MOOCs starting soon, both run by our Open University.

The first isn’t obvious from the title & isn’t explicitly about creative writing but see what you think – “How to read…a mind“, starting in March & runs for a neat 2 weeks:

“How do we read and model fictional minds? Introducing cognitive poetics: the application of cognitive science to literary reading.”

It’s all about exploring how and why we get moved by fictional characters and literature – surely valuable knowledge for any writer? I’m hoping it will help me analyse how to give potential readers a richer experience.

The second is more straightforward: “Start Writing Fiction“, starting in April & running for 8 weeks

“This hands-on course helps you to get started with your own fiction writing, focusing on the central skill of creating characters.”

No previous experience is required but the content looks useful for more seasoned writers as much as newbies.

My previous experience of MOOCs has been on Coursera – I don’t know how well FutureLearn’s learning platform will work and that can make or break the experience. It’s also all about having enough time to keep up and enough enthusiasm to keep going…
